Our Flawed Educational System

Forewarning: I am originally from Africa, Nigeria, which is a developing country, I am speaking/typing out of my experience and my own personal knowledge of education in and outside Africa, so yes my thoughts on this topic may or may not be biased, sort of ignorant and inaccurate.

School is- on a normal basis- hell, school is literally depressing and no there are no excuses, nothing about "but the people in it are great" "and you get to learn yay" nope. None of that. Everything about the concept school is sad. You wake up very early in the morning to go somewhere unhygienic, so people can explain to you how to do/solve useless things, your hallway is littered by people you know, don't know, and don't like (there is no in between) also half or rather more than half of these people are fake and are usually manipulative except for the actually tolerable ones that don't make you feel completely like crap, you write tests on the useless pieces of information given to you, pray not to fail, then fail, cause like you can't pass school tests- cause the teachers don't like anyone except for that one student that somehow always passes, eat in school, get assignments that have nothing to do with what you learned that day, then struggle to find your way back home. To be honest the education system undeniably sucks.

I could go on and on about how much school sucks, but I want to talk about how our education system is flawed in the sense that, they literally teach us nothing important. Everything we are taught in school has no absolute use in the real world. In school, you learn nothing about how to separate your social life from your academic life and yet it's highly demanded of us. They teach you how to find 'x' in a quadratic equation but not how to deal with domestic abuse, they teach you how to throw javelins during P.E, cause I mean obviously, that's way more useful than self-defense classes, they don't teach you manners or morals cause learning the uses and examples of isotopes are more of a life or death situation, we learn how to get credentials and certificates, not how to use them, school does not teach us how to stop loving someone, instead we are convinced that grades and teachers determine who exactly we are, and our exact position in the hierarchy of life.

"But Deola obviously you've learned something from school, you are able to read and subtract, it's not absolutely useless"

I won't lie, yes of course school isn't completely useless. But the truth is any sort of information I would ever need in life has been given to me from Grade 5 downwards, whereas, everything above that has brought no reasonable milestone in my life, nothing necessarily useful to my near future. I mean I can confidently say that in the next 5 years I will most definitely not be in an office struggling to remember how to plot a simultaneous linear graph. No sir, that is not God's will for my life. And the fact that the educational system doesn't consider making their syllabuses more realistic is downright scary, we aren't taught on how to deal with mental disabilities or depression or anxiety, nope, we are instead constantly fueled on types of essays, Honestly great work Board of Education, next time my friend wants to commit suicide I'll just write an essay on 'Economic Recession'.

Most of the important things we carry from generation to generation we learn from our friends, family, society, Google and YouTube. Nothing that's useful in the long run of things I can confidently say that all I have learned in mathematics this semester will never come to use in my near future (leaving out exams and all). And the saddest part about this is that we judge people on these things, cause the fact that a university graduate without scruples or morals is more respectable than a high school drops out with decency is very sad. This is the era we have chosen to breed our next generation where the amount of certificates and papers in your briefcase determines your way of life.

We should wake up and realize our future leaders will not be plotting graphs or answering comprehension questions. Our future leaders- us- will be looking on how to make financially stable decisions, making people shake with our voices, not our essays, creating a better hygienic society, and solving real-life problems, our future leaders will not be analyzing the themes of Shakespeare's Othello, or how many people died during the Nigerian Civil War, We will be too busy shaking tables, cracking walls, and breaking windows to think about the internal organs of a frog. We will not stand to keep looking back on history, we will be making history wherever we step, creating a revolution.

My point is not "drop out", I did not say that one, don't tell your parents that Deola said, " school is useless and I want to drop out the cause of her" cause that "her" you are talking about will not answer you. All a female's trying to say is give students more realistic topics, raise more important topics during English class, don't recycle the same thing over and over again. Teach us what to do in a case of emergency. Teach us how to regulate saddist thoughts and control anxiety. Explain to us that sometimes things we say or do have effects on people. Teach us how to be solid individuals, how to love ourselves and others. Let's learn the more important and realistic things, please and thank you.

  1. Love thisss! But really, let’s face it, the majority of those who complain about school being totally useless to their lives are those who aren’t studying the courses they have real interest in. Myself for example, I’m into Media, and I’m studying Mass Communication. I initially thought “what nonsense will they teach me that I don’t already know” but trust me I’ve learnt and am still learning.

    1. ASSGFHRGJK thank you so much for reading and giving your 2 cents on the situation first of all, but yes I get where you are coming from but the truth is more than half of the things learnt in school are not realistic in any way, and the least the education board could do is bring in more realistic subjects and topics. Let's not waste our time yunno 😖😂❤

Girl Code

Girl code is a topic I, as a female and all, am very very familiar with, Girl code is simply a bunch of spoken/unspoken laws that go around the girl community, it's quite like Bro code only difference more of less is repercussions and the fact that Girl code is more universal and what not. Girl code  can easily be explained as a set of rules, ethnics and even beliefs that demands ultimate loyalty to one's female friends above anyone else, be it parents, siblings, and in extreme cases God- no one's above a female    As seen, we as females are all in this cult universally, we're all sisters you know?, As females of the world we're all expected to follow a set of written/unwritten rules in order to keep friendships, at some point in our lives, we've been asked to sacrifice happiness and what we want to do, so we don't lose our female friends To me, personally, I feel girl code is more or less messed up, in most aspects really cause I see no absolute re...

Choosing "YOUR" right career

It is not at all easy finding something you would want to do for the rest of your life right? Not in the slightest way Choosing a career is one of the scariest thing to do in/before your final year (where I am), cause once you've chosen that career that is going to be your main  source of income for more or less the rest of your life, you cannot just wing  this important decision that defines you as an individual. Careers change over time, they change constantly till you settle down in a spot (career) and this very spot you decide to settle has to be beneficiary, you have to like it and earn from it.  When I was 4, if you'd ask me what I wanted to be, I'd tell you "a fairy" the simpler times right?, I'd want wings and a wand and all of that junk, I was down for spending the rest of my life in the air granting wishes to children and dogs. That was all I wanted to do, to be honest, and at the time, my parents found absolutely nothing wrong with that, the whole i...

The Aftermath of Heartbreak

Heartbreak, (unfortunately or fortunately) is one of the most inescapable occurrences in our existence. It's something no one can deny having a share of. As long as you are reading this right now. You have suffered through heartbreak.          And don't get it twisted my friends, I'm not saying majority of you have had your hearts broken by the male or female species. Heartbreak isn't just about: boy sees girl, boy likes girl, girl (from out of freaking nowhere) starts to like boy too, boy asks girl out, girl says yes, boy screws girl over, girl sits in her room, battling depression with chocolate icecream, or vice versa. Heartbreak, or rather the cause of heartbreak comes in different shapes and sizes people.          Heartbreak can actually be cause of so many things; heartbreak could come from, a cartoon character, a cringy TV show, Lion King, most commonly a person or an animal.          M...
